The town of Chestermere is part of the Municipal District of Rocky View in the province of Alberta, Canada. It is located just east of Calgary, within rural Rocky View County. It is a bedroom community of Calgary and is a member community of the Calgary Regional Partnership. The town surrounds Chestermere Lake on three sides.
Chestermere's history begins with the construction of the headworks of an irrigation water supply which formed Chestermere Lake. Eventually, residents were attracted to the area for its recreation opportunities and close proximity to Calgary. The Summer Village of Chestermere Lake was incorporated on April 1, 1977.
On March 1, 1993, Chestermere was incorporated as a town although its present population actually renders it larger than some Albertan cities.
Chestermere is located 18 kilometers (11 mi) east of the City of Calgary's downtown core via Highway 1A. Chestermere's primary attraction is the 2.65 square kilometers (1 sq mi) lake and an 18 hole golf course.
Chestermere Lake offers all residents and visitors summer and winter activity. It provides day use parks for launching boats, and family areas for the enjoyment of the outdoors.
